Drone rules: Bermuda
Last checked: October 5, 2026
The BCAA does not mention a registration requirement for recreational flights and does not issue licences to drone pilots; however, it does not state an explicit exemption either.
The BCAA states no insurance requirement for recreational flights; liability insurance with cover abroad still makes sense.
For tourists
Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory with its own aviation authority (BCAA) and its own rules, the Air Navigation (Overseas Territories) Order. You may not fly over settlements and roads, and government land such as the Botanical Gardens requires permission from the Parks Department.
Further rules
- According to the aviation authority BCAA, you do not need permission for recreational flights in Bermuda as long as you follow the local rules. The BCAA does not mention a registration or insurance requirement, but it does not state an explicit exemption either.
- Minimum distances, on the other hand, are clearly regulated: 50 metres from people, vehicles and buildings, and drone flights over built-up areas (roads, villages, towns) are generally prohibited.
- For flights over government property, you also need separate permission from the Parks Department.
- The maximum flight altitude is 400 feet (around 120 metres) above ground level, with continuous visual line of sight.
- You may only fly over your own property or over property whose owner has given permission. You must always keep the drone in sight with your own eyes – flying only via a screen or goggles is not enough.
- BCAA no-fly zones: 2 nautical miles (around 3.7 kilometres) around L.F. Wade Airport, plus Police Headquarters in Prospect, King Edward Memorial Hospital, Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute and Westgate Correctional Facility. In the 4.4-nautical-mile transition zone around the airport, drones over 7 kilograms may only fly with BCAA permission.
