Drone rules: Sweden
Last checked: October 1, 2026
Allowed with conditions
Flying is allowed, but with conditions you need to know before you travel.
Flying is allowed, but you may only publish aerial images of Swedish land with a dissemination permit (spridningstillstånd) from Lantmäteriet.
Required from 250 g, from 80 joules or with a camera or sensor; your German operator ID is valid, and Swedish registration is only possible for residents of Sweden.
Transportstyrelsen does not require insurance for recreational flights with drones under 20 kg; liability cover valid abroad is still advisable.
For tourists
If you want to share aerial photos or videos – even privately on social media – you first need a free dissemination permit from Lantmäteriet; processing currently takes around 65 working days, so apply early. Take-off and landing bans can apply in nature reserves and national parks; exemptions are granted by the relevant county administrative board (Länsstyrelse).
Further rules
- In Sweden, you complete your operator registration via the Drönarsidan of the Transportstyrelsen – mandatory from a take-off mass of 250 grams, for an impact energy of more than 80 joules, or for any drone with a camera or other sensor.
- You only register once, in the EASA state where you live – the EASA area comprises the EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Your operator ID is then valid throughout the EASA area: if you are already registered in another EASA country, you don't need a second registration in Sweden. Only if you live outside the EASA area do you register in the EASA state where you first fly.
- Third-party liability insurance is not mandatory in Sweden for private recreational flying with drones under 20 kilograms – the obligation under the basic EU rule only applies above that.
- You may only fly closer than 1,000 metres to a heliport after coordinating with the heliport. Take-off and landing bans can apply in nature reserves and national parks; exemptions are granted by the relevant county administrative board (Länsstyrelse).
- In the open category, the maximum flight altitude is 120 metres above ground level, as uniformly regulated across the EU.
