Drone rules: Namibia
Last checked: October 5, 2026
Permit required
You may only fly here with a permit issued by the authorities in advance.
Every flight needs prior written approval from the NCAA; as a foreigner you apply at least 60 days before entry.
All drones, including recreational ones, need an NCAA approval (RPAS Letter of Approval); the German registration does not replace it.
For the application you need liability insurance that covers you, the flight days, Namibia and drones.
For tourists
Submit the application to the NCAA at least 60 days before entry. Flying is prohibited in national parks such as Etosha; the environment ministry does not issue permits for private flights.
Further rules
- In Namibia, every drone needs prior written approval from the aviation authority NCAA, including recreational flights. The application must include proof of liability insurance valid for the flight days, for Namibia and for drones.
- Without special permission, the maximum flight altitude is just 45 metres (150 feet) – significantly lower than the standard common elsewhere.
- Flying is prohibited in national parks, including Etosha National Park; the environment ministry does not issue permits for private flights. Restricted zones also apply around aerodromes.
- The crucial catch for travellers: applications must be submitted at least 60 days before entry.
- This makes it effectively unworkable for a spontaneously planned trip – if you really want to fly your own drone in Namibia, you need to plan for it long before booking your flight.
