Drone rules: Guyana
Last checked: October 5, 2026
Permit required
You may only fly here with a permit issued by the authorities in advance.
Drones with a camera or radio transmission need a permit from the aviation authority GCAA including a security check of at least 29 days.
Instead of registration you apply to the GCAA for a flight permit; only drones up to 7 kg without camera or data transmission are exempt.
The GCAA requires proof of liability insurance for commercial operations and for flights that obtain, record or transmit information – which includes private camera footage.
Depending on drone weight
- From 7 kgOver 7 kg always requires a permit, even without a camera
For tourists
Submit your application with a letter to the Director General, the information sheet and a copy of your passport by email to the GCAA at least a good month before your trip.
Further rules
- In Guyana, the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) is responsible for approving and overseeing drones; anyone wishing to operate an aircraft must generally submit a formal application together with an information sheet and proof of identity by email.
- Only drones up to 7 kilograms that are not used commercially and send or receive no data other than control may fly without a permit – common camera drones with video transmission do not qualify and need a GCAA permit.
- The maximum flight altitude is 150 metres above ground; in addition, a horizontal operating radius of 500 metres around the pilot’s position applies, along with continuous visual contact with the aircraft.
- Minimum distances must be kept from, among others, crowds (150 metres), third-party vehicles and buildings (100 metres) and individual people (50 metres); night flights and flights in poor visibility are not permitted.
- The GCAA requires proof of liability insurance for commercial operations and for flights that obtain, record or transmit information – which includes camera footage. Since the security clearance takes at least 29 days according to the GCAA, it is best to apply well before your trip.
