For tourists

In Greenland, EU law does not apply but the Greenlandic regulation BL 9-4 does. You may not fly over settlements and towns, and over sensitive nature areas such as the national park, Melville Bay and Angujaartorfiup Nunaa only with permission from the Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority; you may not film or chase polar bears.

Further rules

  • Greenland is an autonomous Danish overseas territory and is not part of EU/EASA airspace – the European drone regulation explicitly does not apply there, and neither do EU proofs of competency (A1/A3, A2). Instead, a separate Greenlandic-Danish set of rules applies (including BL 9-4), and the responsible authority is the Danish civil aviation authority Trafikstyrelsen.
  • The maximum flight altitude is just 100 metres above ground – lower than the EU standard of 120 metres. Higher flights are only possible with a separate exemption following a prior risk assessment.
  • Liability insurance is required by law for drones between 7 and 25 kilograms and for jet-powered drones. For lighter recreational drones the Danish Transport Authority states neither an insurance nor a registration requirement; an EU registration does not apply in Greenland either.
  • No-fly zones: 5 kilometres from civilian airfields, 8 kilometres from military air bases, 150 metres from built-up areas and larger public roads; flying over densely populated towns and settlements is generally not permitted.
  • You may not fly over sensitive nature areas listed in BL 7-16, including Greenland National Park, Melville Bay and the Angujaartorfiup Nunaa area south-west of Kangerlussuaq; you can request permission for flights there from the Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority. In addition, it is expressly forbidden to film or chase polar bears with a drone.
  • For tourists with a normal recreational drone under 7 kilograms, flying outside protected areas and settlements is generally possible; for anything beyond the standard rules (towns, greater altitude, heavier drones), a prior exemption from the Trafikstyrelsen is required.
