Further rules

  • Since August 2025, ANAC Resolution No. 550/2025 has introduced a new three-tier system of open, specific and certified categories, which replaces the previous 20 classifications and is more closely aligned with European and ICAO standards.
  • In the open category (drones up to 25 kilograms), a free digital sworn declaration with the National Aircraft Register is enough from 250 grams; drones under 250 grams are exempt – ANAC Resolution 312/2026 worded this more clearly in May 2026, but the exemption already existed before. Since 23 May 2026, rotary-wing aircraft flying exclusively in rural areas belong to the open category regardless of their weight. Otherwise, conventional registration with markings is only required from 25 kilograms in the specific category.
  • Over national parks and other protected areas, flying motorised aircraft is prohibited under the National Parks Act (Ley 22.351). Flying is also prohibited, among other places, over airports, military and security facilities and in the immediate vicinity of government buildings such as the Casa Rosada and foreign embassies; minimum distances apply to railway lines and power lines. ANAC Resolution 312/2026 removed the restrictions on roads and on night flights from the aviation rules.
  • Third-party liability insurance is mandatory for the specific and certified categories; whether it is also compulsory for purely private recreational flights in the open category under 25 kilograms cannot be clearly determined from the available sources, so it makes sense to check with ANAC before your trip.
  • Separate rules specifically for foreign tourists are not documented in the available sources.
