Drone rules: Oman
Last checked: October 5, 2026
Permit required
You may only fly here with a permit issued by the authorities in advance.
Every drone must be registered with the aviation authority, and to fly you need a licence from the CAA, which among other things requires liability insurance. Only toy drones up to 250 g without a camera or sensors that fly no higher than 100 m are exempt from the licence requirement.
Registration for all drones, since 2026 via AirPortal or the Sarab app.
Liability insurance required for the entire licence period.
For tourists
The procedure is not clearly described for visitors: the CAA service page still lists applications from individuals as planned for the future, and processing depends on no-objection letters from other authorities. Allow plenty of lead time or ask the CAA beforehand; the minimum age is 18. Flying without a licence costs 500 OMR.
Further rules
- In Oman, every drone must be registered with the Civil Aviation Authority CAA, since early 2026 via the digital system AirPortal or the Sarab app. Only toy drones up to 250 grams without a camera or other sensors that fly no higher than 100 metres are exempt from the licence requirement.
- For registered drones, third-party liability insurance is required by law for the entire period of validity of the licence.
- The maximum flight altitude is 120 metres above ground level, and flying is only permitted in daylight.
- No-fly zones apply within a radius of 5 kilometres of airports, seaports and protected sites; densely populated areas may not be overflown without separate permission, nor may convoys or ongoing police/fire brigade operations. You may only fly at night with prior permission.
- The minimum age is 18. The CAA does not state how long the permit takes; it depends on no-objection letters from other authorities.
- Violations can result in fines of between 200 and 600 OMR, 500 OMR for operating without a licence, and double for repeat offences.
